Kentucky Baptist Campus Ministry » Missions http://www.kybcm.org connecting Kentucky college students with missions and ministry Thu, 04 Feb 2010 18:23:21 +0000 en hourly 1 Georgetown College @ Mission Arlington 2009! http://www.kybcm.org/georgetown-college-mission-arlington-2009/ http://www.kybcm.org/georgetown-college-mission-arlington-2009/#comments Mon, 30 Mar 2009 18:36:34 +0000 Katie McCracken http://www.kybcm.org/?p=96  “I left my heart in Arlington!” This was the common phrase among the 19 students and two staff members who traveled 16 hours back to Georgetown College after a week of playing, praying, and most importantly, ministering to the ”less-fortunate” children and families in Arlington, Texas. For 5 days, we worked with Mission Arlington, an organization of missionaries whose life mission is “taking church to people.” As one of the volunteer groups for the week, that’s what we did too! We, along with 1,300 students and adults, served the physical and spiritual needs of the people living in Arlington, Texas. Our group led “Rainbow Express”-Mission Arlington’s version of a backyard Bible club, with games, crafts, bible stories, snacks, and lots of love and affection. From day one, the children loved us, and were so happy that we were there to play with them. It was especially touching to return each day to find them anxiously waiting for us. One of the girls told us when we arrived, “It’s about time you got here; I’ve been waiting two whole hours for you all!” I love how God speaks through the vulnerability and honesty of a child! God is calling us to His people and they are anxiously waiting for us!

This conviction was expressed during our nightly de-briefing meetings when the students discussed how they could take what they learned in Arlington, and apply it to the Georgetown campus community. They challenged one another to continue the mission by reaching out and loving those who are in their own Georgetown College backyard. It was such a blessing to see how God moved in the lives of those we ministered to, and the team itself. The students not only connected with the kids on site, but also with each other. By the end of the week, the group bonded and connected into a family unit. They truly respected and cared for each other!

Through everything we experienced and learned that week, the idea that the mission doesn’t have to end in Arlington, but that it is an everyday act of love, compassion, commitment, and responsibility to those with whom we are surrounded by, was the most important lesson and blessing that our students took away from their spring break!

We are a sparsely populated state and many churches do not have enough workers to do large outreach events such as Block Parties, Backyard Bible Clubs or Vacation Bible School in their town. We are looking for committed college-age students to step in for 8-13 weeks the summer of 2009 and help these churches reach their communities.

Two of the opportunities that are available for next summer are from the same church. Kila Country Church in northern Montana needs two female missionaries. One missionary to plan and implement a children’s ministry and the other to implement a youth ministry in the church.  Kila is a small country town that has a need to reach the young people. These two female missionaries would need to be open and creative about ministry in a small town and to young people.

Please prayerfully consider getting this specific request to your students and let them know they can make an impact on Big Sky Country next summer.  If you have students interested in this assignment the project can be found on answerthecall.net, the project numbers are MT02SR09 & MT06SR09. This is a night aimed at educating students about the missions opportunites all around them. We will have several different “presenters” or speakers here to discuss the diverse ways to serve. The Goodmans, IMB missionaries serving in Russia, will speak about overseas missions and long term service. Jamie & Christina Pittman, missionaries with Pioneers, will also be speaking about overseas ministry. Several Christian camps will be here to talk about the opportunities for students to serve on staff in different ways with them all summer. And Heather Walsh will talk about the 1:8 Experience to let our students know about that opportunity also. It should be a fun but imformitive night letting students now that it is time to apply for these things and use the time the Lord has given you wisely!

Students from the 1:8 Leadership Experience organized a mission trip to an area hit by flooding this past summer. Over 130 students from different campuses came together to serve, including UK, Morehead STate, NKU, and Cumberland.  Projects included replacing insulation and skirting at a trailer park.    Below is an article about the weekend.
