I know God was speaking to me through His Word through this verse to give a more clearly defined purpose to this week for me. As a senior pre-med major, my classes are very demanding and it’s very tempting to see spring break as a “workless/rest” week. Rest is vital for the demands of my major. I was at a crossroads in making my decision to go to Charleston or rest for the week, but I felt God’s hand pointing toward Charleston, “the good way.” In my mind I was thinking, we’re going to Charleston, we’re going to participate in urban ministry with those who haven’t encountered a relationship with the Divine. God had a different plan. My team was involved in a very rural ministry setting, helping a man named George, his sister Ezzie, and her son Ken (who were dedicated Christians) renovate an older home (painting, removing 40 year old linoleum, etc.) The demands of our current economic situation have lead Ezzie, who is in her 70’s, to continue working at a local factory to support her disabled son and brother. With disabilities and the demands of a job, little of the needed household upkeep tasks had been completed in some time. We completed painting a living room, hallway, and bedroom and made way for new linoleum to be laid next week, and all in all, completing these tasks was trivial compared to the work the Lord did on us as a team through George and his family. The work that was visible stands in no comparison to the invisible transforming power of the Holy Spirit. George was a great encouragement to our team, a great example of humility, and it was evident to us that George enjoyed glorifying God with us. Jesus bridges generational, social, economic, and any other divide you could imagine, and that connection was made very evident in our interactions with George. There is an ancient Indian word, Namaste , which literally translates “I see the Holy One in you.” I can wholeheartedly proclaim that I saw the Holy One in George. I came to Charleston thinking I was following Jesus, and I suppose if you’re following someone, occasionally you’ll catch up with them, and I can assuredly say I caught up with Jesus in George. Although this week has been filled with work (spiritual and physical labor), and hard work at that, I’ve truly found rest for my soul in finding Jesus in George.

Tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM in the Gatliff Chapel at UC, Ray Sydnor will be preaching and sharing his story with freshmen for BCM Spring Renewal Services. His before and after story is that he was a 1980 Eagles’ Super Bowl Teammate, a 19-year crack cocaine addict who, by God’s grace, began recovery in 1996 and is now being used by God to preach the gospel both as Youth Minister at Brooklyn Tabernacle, NY, NY, and throughout the country!

However, though the excitement and anticipation of seeing God’s hand move is prominent we still need your help! We are a sparsely populated state and many churches do not have enough workers to do large outreach events such as Block Parties, Backyard Bible Clubs or Vacation Bible School in their town. We are looking for committed college-age students to step in for 8-13 weeks the summer of 2009 and help these churches reach their communities.

Two of the opportunities that are available for next summer are from the same church. Kila Country Church in northern Montana needs two female missionaries. One missionary to plan and implement a children’s ministry and the other to implement a youth ministry in the church. Kila is a small country town that has a need to reach the young people. These two female missionaries would need to be open and creative about ministry in a small town and to young people.

Please prayerfully consider getting this specific request to your students and let them know they can make an impact on Big Sky Country next summer. If you have students interested in this assignment the project can be found on answerthecall.net, the project numbers are MT02SR09 & MT06SR09. If you have any further questions please contact me at the information below. I look forward to what God is going to do next summer through His people in this great state.

WOW! The beginning of this school year has been wonderful on all of our campuses in the Owensboro Area. Students are excited, leadership team is on the ball with all their responsibilities, administrators on the campuses are welcoming and cooperative and God is opening doors for ministry with students daily. Let’s give God praise and thanks for what He is doing in our ministry.Owensboro students have a new atmosphere and format for worship which they are really responding to with enthusiasm. Our freshman ministry, F.R.O.G. had a great beginning under the leadership of intern, Maeghan Garrett and Crystal Fishburn, leadership team member. Madisonville Community College students come to Bible Study with great spirits and numbers. Henderson Community College students and staff are excited about moving to a new location and having wonderful leadership from interns Scott and Jackie Newman who live in Henderson and offer much to students and churches. Owensboro Community and Technical and WKU Owensboro campuses will have a new on-site Bible Study on Thursday afternoons led by intern, Mark Adkins.

Our Owensboro C.R.O.S.S. leadership team members Joel Adcock, Crystal Fishburn, Brandon Newman, and Nicole Greer have been hard at work with ministries such as Traveling Praise Team, FROG, church relations, and hospitality. Lauren Seber, Sarah Gibson and Tim Hicks have planned worship services for this semester and are leading the services with warm, encouraging spirits. I’m telling you all this so you will know that God has placed the right people in the right places of leadership as they use their spiritual gifts and wonderful talents to minister to students this year. Please pray for them as they serve.

September 19-21, 18 students and interns will travel with me to Refocus at Jonathan Creek Camp for a time of community building with other BCM students from other Kentucky campus. Pray that as we worship fellowship, play and learn we will listen as God speaks.

In just a few weeks we will go on Fall Break mission trip to Nashville, TN to work through Harvest Hands urban ministry. Students will be painting, repairing buildings, teaching children and helping with a street carnival near downtown Nashville. Students be sure to sign up at C.R.O.S.S. during M&M night next Tuesday, September 16

th. You will have a great experience! Be praying for our ministries as they continue to grow students!
