Colossians 4:2 states “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 reminds us to “pray continually” or “pray without ceasing” depending on your translation. The disciples respected prayer so much, that when the opportunity arose to learn from Jesus, their desire was to learn how to pray. The point of the matter is that prayer has been and will continue to be weapon of choice as we combat the darkness in the Lexington Region.
So why do I begin with these truths? Because it has been through prayer that The Lord is doing wonderful things through the Lexington Region churches and the UK BCM. One example of how we have witnessed the Lord answering prayers is the fact we are reaching the Greek community with the Gospel of Jesus. When I arrived on campus in 2014, noticing our building wonderfully located on fraternity and sorority row, I was thrilled. However, my heart came crashing down when I realized that we had no Greek members that were plugged into the BCM ministry. So, I prayed. I prayed that The Lord would call leaders within our ministry that have a heart’s desire to love our neighbors (literally) into the Kingdom of God. A semester later, He answered that prayer. We currently have a Greek outreach team of 4 students that minister specifically to the needs of the Greek community. We also have the honor to host the Chi Omega Sorority every Monday night for their chapter meetings, connecting with over 300 Greek students a week. God has answered the cry of my heart. I hope He will continue to bring momentum to see Sorority/Fraternity students come to faith.
God is also at work in a new effort on campus at Centre College in Danville. Steven Newton the youth/college minister of Calvary Baptist Church, Danville contacted me over a year ago, with the desire to start a BCM at Centre College. Some Campus Ministry Interns and I met with Steven, listened to his desire to reach the campus with The Gospel of Christ, and then spoke to him about the “how to” begin a campus ministry. When Steven began this endeavor, he had about 5 to 10 students as a core team. Currently, they are reaching 20-30 students with the Truth of the Gospel! Steven is an answer of prayer for me. I pray often that The Lord will burden the hearts of His children to reach a lost generation with The Gospel. “Therefore, I want men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.” 1 Timothy 2:8. Will you join me?
